Eric Habimana wins three medals on debut at African Continental Track Championships

Racing on a velodrome for the first time, Eric Habimana stepped onto the podium three times in three different categories clinching two silvers and one bronze in the junior section at the 2017 African Continental Track Championships in Durban, South Africa.

The teenager who did not have any track cycling experience before flying to South Africa three weeks ago, made history by becoming the first Rwandan rider ever to win at medal at a track event.

Eric stepped up and secured silvers medals in the junior men’s scratch and omnium point’s events.He also picked up a bronze medal in junior men’s team sprint with South Africa’s Keagan Bontekoning and Stephan Belle of Seychelles.

The teenager who rides for the local Fly Cycling Club was thrilled to claim three medals at the continental event.

Keeping the flag flying!

“I am very happy for the medals. This is my first time on the track, my first continental championships and my first time outside Rwanda and I win three medals.”

“This, for me serves as a motivation to work hard and do better in the fiture.At first I was scary to ride on the velodrome but with the help of my coach Nathan and my teammate Didier,I gradually gained confidence.My dream is to win an Olympic medal in track cycling.”said Eric

Rwanda teammate Didier Munyaneza who was also racing on the velodrome for the first time,competed in different events in the elite category finishing 7th and 10th in the scratch and time trial races respectively.

The Rwandan duo coached by Nathan Byukusenge, a former national team cyclist, will compete in two road race events in Durban before they return home on March 27.
