Bonaventure Uwizeyimana makes history as he is crowned Tour du Cameroun champion
Bonaventure Uwizeyimana made history today by becoming the first Rwandan to win the Tour du Cameroun. He was confirmed as the overall victor as he finished safely in the bunch as Sikandji Ghislain (Cameroun) won the final stage in Yaoundé.
Having won the stage five on Thursday, Bonaventure began the final 122.8-kilometre stage in the yellow jersey with a three minutes 36 seconds lead over Martin Haring (Dukla Banska Bystrica). Both riders crossed the finish line together, but the Rwandan was awarded two bonifications points allowing him to finish three minutes 38 seconds ahead of the Slovakian.
“ I am very happy for the win today.I won stages in big competitions before but I had never won the general classification,so this is special for me and my teammates who have worked so hard for me to keep the yellow jersey after stage five.” said Bonaventure
Tour du Cameroun victory also highlights another impressive display of the Rwandan national cycling team at Africa Tours after winning la Tropicale Amissa Bongo and Tour de l’Espoir.
