Didier Munyaneza wins Memorial Lambert with late solo attack

Didier Munyaneza soloed to victory at Memorial Lambert thanks to an aggressive attack some 20km from the finish.Bonnaventure Uwizeyimana and Patrick Byukusenge rounded the podium.

The 158km race named after the former Rwanda Cycling Federation Lambert Byemayire,started in Kigali and ended with a finish circuit in the Huye.

Straight from the start four riders including Valens Ndayisenga,Bosco Nsengimana, Jean Cluade Uwizeye and Manizabayo Eric got clear and pushed their lead out to 3:00.The four-man breakaway was later reduced to two after Bosco and Eric accelerated and succeeded in getting rid of Valens and Jean Claude.

The Benediction Club riders worked smoothly taking turns on the front with Club Amis Sportifs and Cycling Club For All setting behind and the bunch was all back together halfway through the race.

Towards the final 6-lap circuit,Bosco Nsengimana attacked again and Didier Munyaneza and Jean Claude Uwizeye joined him as they entered the circuit Huye.

Didier made his decisive attack with three laps to go and his lead only grew with the rest of the race unable to pull him back,He had time to raise his arms in celebration before crossing the line in a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes, 38 seconds.

Bosco Nsengimana easily grabbed second place ahead of Byukusenge Patrick and Valens Ndayisenga

Jean Claude Mbarushimana won the 92km junior men’s race with Violette Irakoze Neza dominating the women’s race.

Run by Rwanda Cycling Federation, the Cycling Cup race series are sponsored by Skol and Cogebanque.

The next race will take riders from Kayonza to Gicumbi on May 19.
